I'm a big fan of Rene Ranger - genuine x-factor player.
I assumed he was not considered for selection due to injury.
It's going to be interesting to see him pop up outside Ma'a Nonu for the Blues next year.

Another wing that they failed to mention is Rene Ranger, I mean when it comes to power running Ranger is definitely one of the best. Even on defense his power is shown, I fail to see why Ranger's name wasn't mentioned like Lelia Masaga.

Comment on Top 4 Reasons why New Zealand will NOT win the RWC 2011 by mririnui

Here are my top 4 motivations to win:
1. End the Hurt
24 years is a very long time for the top ranked rugby team not to have won the World Cup - way, way too long.

[Football analogy] Instead of being the Brazil of the rugby world, we are the England - we won it once a long time ago when we hosted it and never since.

2. Repay the Faithful
I can't describe how bad it felt to be in the stands at Twickenham watching a poor performance in the 1999 RWC semi-final against France.

The majority of the crowd were cheering for the French including a lot of South Africans who were wanting the Springboks to meet NZ in the playoff for 3rd and 4th. This was very very annoying but you have to swallow it.

For all of the Kiwis who were there that day or watched it on TV - as well as those who were watching live or on TV in the other failures - we would dearly love victory in 2011.
- The semi-final against Australia in '91
- The final against South African in '95
- The semi-final against Australia in '03
- The quarter final against France in '07

3. Let's have some new World Cup heroes
Not to take anything away from those who won it in 1987 but there have been some great players to have come and gone since then, none of whom have the moniker of World Cup Winner.

Let's have a new bunch: McCaw, Kaino, Read, Weepu, Carter, Nonu, Dagg ...

4. Give NZ (rugby) people something genuine to crow about
This country has a lot of people who know little/nothing about rugby but like to talk about it and continually remind all foreigners that we are the best.

The World Cup determines who the best is so winning it will at least give them some basis to the commonly held misconception.

I would prefer to see some real game-changing players in the squad and you make a good point about the opposition. We will continue to struggle to contain guys like Digbb Ione

Agreed. I'm not sure what Gear has done wrong. He is a big winger who can score from anywhere- an industrious hard worker as well is expecting a lot from the big man- and yes, even the great jonah hard far more critism in that regard. The English, Australian and French wingers are going to be bigger than us, the South Africans faster than us. In players like Gear we had true south pacific size and speed most other top countries would be contacting geneologists to get under their colours. It seems enevitable that Zac Guilford is going to be tested defensively in a big way if selected- he has shown bad decision making, poor handlng and lack of strength we haven't seen from our wingers for at least the last 15 years. I suspect Zac is there for the kick chase and the enthusiasm as 3 pointers ultimately decide World Cups (and apparently he's a real 'nice guy' whatever that means.)

OK. So when we see South Africa play, the guy wearing the number 7 jersey is packing down on the blind side of the scrum?

How stupid I feel that I didn't realize that??

There are often left/right strategies used with loose forwards so I should have picked that up
- Ritchie McCaw & Marty Holah
- George Smith & Warwick Waugh

i know this is a year old article, but juan smith is a blindside. in usa and south africa, 6 is the openside, and 7 is the blindside. in my opinion this year brussow should start at 6 and schalk burger at 7, because burger is an openside that plays like a blindside.
